Our Lady of Mount Carmel to Celebrate 180 Years

Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church will be celebrating their 180th anniversary at a special outdoor Shrine Mass on Sunday, July 30. Rosary will be held at 1:30pm and Mass will be celebrated at 2:00pm. Bishop Robert Harris will be the celebrant.

Everyone is invited to attend. A free meal will be held in the church basement following Mass.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel is the oldest Roman Catholic church in continuous use in the Diocese of Saint John and is the mission church of Saint Raphael’s Roman Catholic Church in Blackville. The construction of the church was started in 1836 and its first Mass was celebrated on February 25, 1837. Father Godwin Kalu, SMMM is its current priest.

The village of Blackville is governed by an elected council made up of a mayor and four councillors. Incorporated as a village in 1966, Blackville has a population of 958 and has had a long history related to forestry and salmon fishing.

    It was a pleasure going up that hill on Sunday mornings its is the nicest church
